Paramount Pictures Celebrates the 50th Anniversary Of The Godfather With A Limited Theatrical Release
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s Academy Award®-winning* masterwork The Godfather, Paramount Pictures announced today that the film will have a limited theatrical release in Dolby Vision beginning February 25, 2022. All three films in the epic trilogy have been meticulously restored under the direction of Coppola and will be made available on 4K Ultra HD for the first time ever on March 23, 2022.
“I am very proud of The Godfather, which certainly defined the first third of my creative life,” said Francis Ford Coppola. “With this 50th anniversary tribute, I’m especially proud Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is included, as it captures Mario and my original vision in definitively concluding our epic trilogy. It’s also gratifying to celebrate this milestone with Paramount alongside the wonderful fans who’ve loved it for decades, younger generations who still find it relevant today, and those who will discover it for the first time.”
Coppola’s masterful film adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel chronicles the rise and fall of the Corleone family and the film trilogy is rightfully viewed as one of the greatest in cinematic history. In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the first film’s original release on March 24, 1972, Paramount and Coppola’s production company American Zoetrope undertook a painstaking restoration of all three films over the course of three years.
Every effort was made to create the finest possible presentation for today’s audiences who can watch the films using technology that has advanced dramatically since 2007 when the last restoration was completed by eminent film historian and preservationist Robert Harris. Using that work as a blueprint, the team spent thousands of hours to ensure that every frame was evaluated to create the most pristine presentation while remaining true to the original look and feel of the films.
“We felt privileged to restore these films and a little in awe every day we worked on them,” said Andrea Kalas, senior vice president, Paramount Archives. “We were able to witness first-hand how the brilliant cinematography, score, production design, costume design, editing, performances, and, of course, screenwriting and direction became famously more than the sum of their parts. It was our commitment to honor all of the filmmakers’ exceptional work.”
RESTORATION DETAILS
- Over 300 cartons of film were scrutinized to find the best possible resolution for every frame of all three films.
- Over 4,000 hours were spent repairing film stains, tears, and other anomalies in the negatives.
- Over 1,000 hours were spent on rigorous color correction to ensure the high dynamic range tools were respectful of the original vision of Coppola and cinematographer Gordon Willis.
- In addition to the 5.1 audio approved by Walter Murch in 2007, the original mono tracks on The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II have been restored.
- All work was overseen by Coppola.
Newly restored and remastered in Dolby Vision, all three films in the landmark trilogy will be released together with HDR-10 on 4K Ultra HD Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray™ for the first time ever. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set will include The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, and Coppola’s recently re-edited version of the final film, Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. In addition to the widely available 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set, a 4K Ultra HD Limited Collector’s Edition will also be released in deluxe packaging and includes a hardcover coffee table book featuring stunning photographs, as well as portrait art prints on archival paper. Both 4K Ultra HD sets include new bonus content including an introduction to The Godfather by Coppola, a featurette about the preservation process, photos by acclaimed photographer Steve Schapiro, home movie footage, and comparisons of the new restoration to earlier versions of the films. The Australasian Intimacy Coordination Network Holds Inaugural Regional Conference For Industry Professionals
There are many titles for those who create the choreography, direct the movement, and facilitate the physical and psychological safety for screen and stage ‘intimate scenes’ – that is, those vulnerable story-telling moments which may involve nudity, medical, toilet, bathing, kissing, simulated sex or simulated sexual abuse or assault. Their titles have included “intimacy choreographers, intimacy coaches, intimacy consultants, intimacy professionals, intimacy directors” and increasingly popularly, “intimacy coordinators.” These roles have been more in demand in Australia since MEAA established Australia’s Stage and Screen Intimacy Guidelines in 2020, and SPA added these to their Screen Safety protocols in 2021. Sometimes these roles have been combined with other on-set roles, such as “fight coordinators, on-set welfare coordinators, covid-safe coordinators” and even “standby wardrobe” – all of which has made it tricky up until now to decipher which expertise or services these different titles comprise.

The Australasian Intimacy Coordination Network (AICN) is a new organisation that exists to bring together those who self-identify as intimacy professionals for stage and screen in the Australasian region. Co-founded by Stephanie Power of Intimacy Coordinators Australia in Melbourne and Michela Carattini of Key Intimate Scenes in Sydney, “the network was a simple way of getting us working together, and sharing the expertise within Australia, rather than always looking overseas.” says Carattini. “We don’t all have the same expertise,” she adds, “each artist has their own strengths and niche areas, which makes them better suited for some projects and less so for others, so we now have a body that can point clients in the best direction for their specific needs.”

With 33 members in the network and growing, the inaugural meeting was attended online from all over Australia, including from Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide. Power, who hosted the meeting, explained “[Michela and I] both had a mutually shared vision to create for our region of the world a more inclusive practice space, one that recognised existing knowledge, training, industry skills, and informed cultural diversities. As the first network of Intimacy Professionals in our region, our mission is to provide culturally appropriate platforms that foster support, associations, shared knowledge, and professional development across the Australasian region, [as well as] to firmly establish an Australian identity in Intimacy Coordination that has a globally recognised professional standing.”

The meeting addressed region-specific conversations on the practical implications of the work, including titles, insurance, rates, and qualifications. Asabi Goodman, based in Brisbane, stated she was “so glad to know that there are so many of us in Australia working together to safeguard and empower actors to tell bold, intimate stories,” while Adeeb Razzouk, based in Sydney, hopes to broaden the accessibility of the work to Arabic-speaking artists. Topics the network plans to continue to develop include collaborations, professional development, in-person training opportunities, academic research, and local suppliers for modesty garments, barriers, and other “intimacy kit” necessities. The New Trailer And Poster For The Star-Studded “Death On The Nile” Just Dropped
A new trailer for 20th Century Studios’ “Death on the Nile” is here. This tale of passion and jealousy, which is directed by and stars five-time Academy Award® nominee Kenneth Branagh and features an all-star ensemble cast, opens in Australian cinemas February 10, 2022.
Based on the 1937 novel by Agatha Christie, “Death on the Nile” is a daring mystery-thriller about the emotional chaos and deadly consequences triggered by obsessive love. Kenneth Branagh, back as the iconic detective Hercule Poirot, is joined by Tom Bateman, four-time Oscar® nominee Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders and Letitia Wright. “Death on the Nile,” which reunites the filmmaking team behind 2017’s global hit “Murder on the Orient Express,” is written by Michael Green, adapted from Christie’s novel, and is produced by Ridley Scott, Kenneth Branagh, p.g.a., Judy Hofflund, p.g.a. and Kevin J. Walsh, with Mark Gordon, Simon Kinberg, Matthew Jenkins, James Prichard and Mathew Prichard serving as executive producers.
Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple’s idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short. Set against an epic landscape of sweeping desert vistas and the majestic Giza pyramids, this dramatic tale of love gone wrong features a cosmopolitan group of impeccably dressed travellers and enough wicked twists and turns to leave audiences guessing until the final, shocking denouement.
Filmed with 65mm Panavision cameras in late 2019, “Death on the Nile” transports audiences to the 1930s, recreating many of the locations that served as inspiration for Christie’s glamorous, high society thriller.
With audiences returning to cinemas, Disney has committed to an exclusive theatrical release for “Death on the Nile.” 20th Century Studios production president Steve Asbell says, “Ken’s sweeping, elegant vision for this classic story deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible. We’re so proud of this film, our brilliant cast, and the stellar work that went into bringing ‘Death on the Nile’ to screen. We know that audiences can’t wait to experience Hercule Poirot’s next adventure, and we’re thrilled to continue working with Ken as he lends his masterful storytelling vision to the newest film in this celebrated franchise.”
James Prichard, chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Ltd., says, “More than 100 years after the publication of Agatha Christie’s first novel, her crime fiction works remain immensely popular and continue to be discovered anew by people around the world. I’m thrilled that Disney and our partners believe in this franchise, which has helped introduce millions of new fans to Christie’s classic works. We’re honored to be in business with Disney, Ken, and all who are dedicated to preserving the long legacy of these titles for future generations.”

This Documentary captures behind the scenes of an International theatre collaboration in the middle of a global pandemic!
In 2017 Brisbane based Belloo Creative started a long-term collaboration with Japan’s IDIOT SAVANT theater company and New Zealand’s Good Company Arts. The companies met in Japan at the Tokyo Performing Arts Meeting and in 2018 Belloo Creative brought them all to Australia for a first creative development.
In 2020, just prior to the pandemic, they premiered their new work, House in the Dunes, in a 400-year old temple in Yokohama. But the main goal was a show for the Tokyo Tokyo Festival, to coincide with the 2020 Olympics. Little did they realise that by the time production was due to begin, the world would be facing a once in our lifetime pandemic, hampering overseas travel and decimating the arts sector.
Not to be deterred the work was not abandoned, merely postponed to 2021 to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics, resulting in a successful season in the small village of Akiruno in July 2021, thereby allowing Belloo to deliver on their vision to provide content globally across artforms that inspire imagination, collaboration and change.
Belloo Creative’s Caroline Dunphy said, “We were preparing for a production in Japan (alongside a New Zealand company) and then suddenly none of us could travel – but our ideas and some form of our art could travel, even when we couldn’t.”
Akiruno is the name of a small village, west of Tokyo, in the mountains, where the Blue Herons nest in spring and summer. The all-ages performance is named after the village and was developed in collaboration with their community, including local actors, working alongside the ensemble of IDIOT SAVANT theatre company (Japan) and artists from Belloo Creative (Australia) and Good Company Arts (New Zealand) over a period of 18 months.
A documentary on the making of this international theatre show, with collaborators from three different countries, in the middle of a global pandemic is now being released with thanks to funding from the Australian Government through the Australia-Japan Foundation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Of the linguistic challenges co-director of Belloo Creative Katherine Lyall-Watson said, “There were so many Zoom meetings with Kay, our wonderful translator – and if you’ve ever done intercultural bilingual meetings, you’ll know that everything takes at least three times as long as it normally would!”
Running at 20mins, this documentary allows a rare insight behind the scenes into the creative process and what it truly takes to collaborate. “We’d always planned to take a documentary filmmaker to Japan with us to make AKIRUNO, and fortunately the Australia Japan Foundation were happy for us to use our funding to create a different sort of documentary – one about the process of collaborating from different countries to make a live performance in Japan,” said Dunphy.
Lyall-Watson had been asked to adapt Japanese folktales from Akiruno into a stage play for the production. “As a playwright, it’s so strange to write a play and have it staged and never have the chance to see it,” she said. “I hope it will have another life and that I’ll get to see it one day.”
The AKIRUNO documentary will be launched at an online Research Showcase from the School of Creative Practice, QUT today Friday 17th December from 1-2pm (AEST). This will be followed by a live Q&A with QUT’s Dr Kathryn Kelly and Belloo Creative’s Co-Artistic Directors Caroline Dunphy and Katherine Lyall-Watson.
