2022 STANLEY HAWES AWARD

The winner of this year’s Stanley Hawes Award is screen journalist, David Tiley.

An indefatigable champion of documentary and factual production, and one of our most passionate grassroots commentators on the screen business, David has long been a singular voice in the Australian media. Throughout his career, David has worked tirelessly in roles at Film Victoria, the Australian Film Commission, AFTRS, and ScreenHub – acting as editor since 2005 before becoming the Content Lead for Film in 2021. With this award, AIDC acknowledges his outstanding contribution to the Australian documentary and factual sector.

David Tiley said, “I am so happy with this I can’t uncurl my toes. And really delighted that the Stanley Hawes Award recognises that documentary is a broad passion and not just a bunch of shows. I am so honoured (and relieved) that wordsmiths are seen as part of the movement.”

The Stanley Hawes Award was established in 1997 to honour documentary producer and director Stanley Hawes, Producer-in-Chief of the Australian National Film Board and Commonwealth Film Unit from 1946-1969 – and recognises the significant support he gave independent filmmakers in the documentary sector. Since its inception, 23 recipients have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the documentary and factual sector in the tradition of Stanley Hawes. The recipient receives a $5,000 cash prize.

Award-winning rescue documentary, Lion Ark, is streaming for the first time

The award-winning rescue documentary, Lion Ark, is streaming for the first time today on EarthStream.

Lion Ark tells the story of the daring rescue by Animal Defenders International (ADI) to enforce a ban on the use of animals in circuses by the Government of Bolivia. More action adventure than traditional documentary, Lion Ark is up close and personal, in the thick of the action. Circuses defy the law, but are tracked down, animals are saved, and a joyous finale sees 25 lions airlifted to freedom. A story of bravery, compassion, a country that said ‘no’ to cruelty, and how attitudes towards animals changed across a continent. Lion Ark captures what it is to be at the heart of a rescue mission when the outcome is far from known.

View the Lion Ark trailer here.

The critically acclaimed movie took film festivals by storm, winning 11 awards and an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding International Motion Picture – a first for an animal protection film in the prestigious civil rights awards.

Reel Talk dubbed Lion Ark “the feel-good movie of the year!”; The Hollywood Reporter “Compelling”; The New York Times “Refreshing”; The Ecologist “A consciousness-raising milestone”; Shock Cinema Magazine / Mondo Film & Video Guide “heartwarming, beautiful, inspirational…power of documentary filmmaking”; Shockya.com “emotionally powerful”; Epoch Times “courageous”; Nature Network / Huffington Post “poignant”; Britflicks “unmissable” and “Born Free with balls on”.

The film has been broadcast in over 40 countries, a favorite on Animal Planet and Discovery in Latin America, has been shown in the National Congress in Italy, the US, Bolivia, and Pennsylvania State, but this is the first time it has been available to stream worldwide. The new ethical platform EarthStream has been selected for the launch, with funds from subscriptions going to ADI’s international rescues.

With no facilities for many of the banned circus animals in Bolivia, ADI undertook an unprecedented operation, setting up a temporary rescue unit to receive animals, raiding every circus and emptying every cage. ADI rescued and relocated 29 lions and rehomed monkeys and other animals in Bolivia. The success of Operation Lion Ark and its popularity triggered animal circus bans throughout Latin America and beyond. Since then, ADI has carried out similar missions in Colombia, Peru (rescuing over 100 animals and flying 33 lions to South Africa), and Guatemala (relocating over 20 lions and tigers to the US and South Africa). ADI now operates its own wildlife sanctuary in South Africa, built for its circus survivors and others.

Lion Ark Director Tim Phillips notes that although eye-opening, the film is fun and uplifting: “We wanted people to experience a frontline animal rescue, both the challenges and the joy. The film tackles a serious issue, but is exciting and leaves people with a smile on their face, knowing they can make a difference as they see the lives of these animals transform.”

EarthStream, available on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku, will be screening the best films from the conservation and animal protection world. The platform has over 400 documentaries, shorts, and clips and will be adding new content every month, including new releases from ADI Films. EarthStream is designed to help non-profits helping animals, with 25% of revenues donated.

As a special promotion, for every subscription made though the Lion Ark page, $30 (normally $20) from every annual subscription will directly benefit ADI’s rescued animals.

$30 will buy:

  • A pair of bolt cutters to cut an animal free from their cage or chains.
  • Provide soft hay bedding for ten shelters for the circus survivors at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary (ADIWS).
  • Build 3ft of fencing for a lion habitat at ADIWS – that’s like giving a rescued lion their first step to freedom into a 2.5+ acre habitat.
  • Fuels an ADIWS firefighter for a month, helping ADIWS put out wildfires in the area and keep animals safe.

See Lion Ark and support ADI’s rescue work: subscribe to EarthStream here.

Made by ADI Films, Lion Ark was part crowd-funded, together with Associate Producers Seafox Productions (production company of CSI actress Jorja Fox) and Vivian Bosch. Jorja Fox and award-winning TV legend Bob Barker both appear in Lion Ark. The film was signed into worldwide distribution with ITV Global and has been broadcasted in over 40 countries.

All other states will release for a limited season from February 10.

Tickets on Sale On Now HERE

The Beatles’ unforgettable concert on the rooftop of Apple Corps’ Savile Row headquarters on January 30, 1969 will debut as special 60-minute feature at IMAX Melbourne, from February 10 – 13 and select traditional cinemas in Victoria from February 17. All other states will release on the big screen for a limited season from February 10.

“I’m thrilled that the rooftop concert from ‘The Beatles: Get Back’ is going to be experienced in IMAX, on that huge screen,” says director/producer Peter Jackson. “It’s The Beatles’ last concert, and it’s the absolute perfect way to see and hear it.”

“Ever since Peter Jackson’s beautiful and illuminating docuseries debuted, we’ve heard non-stop from fans who want to experience its unforgettable rooftop performance in IMAX,” says Megan Colligan, president of IMAX Entertainment. “We are so excited to partner with Disney to bring ‘Get Back’ to an entirely new stage and give Beatles fans everywhere a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch and hear their heroes in the unrivalled sight and sound of IMAX.”

The concert, which features in its entirety in Peter Jackson’s original docuseries “The Beatles: Get Back,” will be optimised for IMAX screens, digitally remastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Remastering) technology. Tickets for the IMAX Melbourne Screenings and other sessions, are currently on sale HERE

ABOUT THE DOCUSERIES:

Directed by three-time Oscar®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson (“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “They Shall Not Grow Old”), “The Beatles: Get Back” takes audiences back in time to the band’s January 1969 recording sessions, which became a pivotal moment in music history. The docuseries showcases The Beatles’ creative process as they attempt to write 14 new songs in preparation for their first live concert in over two years. Faced with a nearly impossible deadline, the strong bonds of friendship shared by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr are put to the test. The docuseries is compiled from nearly 60 hours of unseen footage shot over 21 days, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg in 1969, and from more than 150 hours of unheard audio, most of which has been locked in a vault for over half a century. Jackson is the only person in 50 years to have been given access to this Beatles treasure trove, all of which has now been brilliantly restored.  What emerges is an unbelievably intimate portrait of The Beatles, showing how, with their backs against the wall, they could still rely on their friendship, good humor, and creative genius. While plans derail and relationships are put to the test, some of the world’s most iconic songs are composed and performed. The docuseries features – for the first time in its entirety – The Beatles’ last live performance as a group, the unforgettable rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row, as well as other songs and classic compositions featured on the band’s final two albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be. The three-part docuseries includes never-before-seen, restored footage that at times includes explicit language, mature themes, and smoking. Viewer discretion is advised.

An exciting new collaboration between The Beatles and Jackson presented by The Walt Disney Studios in association with Apple Corps Ltd. and WingNut Films Productions Ltd., “The Beatles: Get Back” is directed by Peter Jackson and stars John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The docuseries is  produced by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon, Olivia Harrison, Jonathan Clyde (“Eight Days a Week”), Clare Olssen (“They Shall Not Grow Old”) and Peter Jackson, with Apple Corps’ Jeff Jones (“Eight Days a Week”) and Ken Kamins (“The Hobbit” trilogy) serving as executive producers. Jabez Olssen (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”) serves as the film’s editor, the music supervisor is Giles Martin (“Rocketman”), Michael Hedges (“The Adventures of Tintin”) and Brent Burge (“The Hobbit” trilogy) serve as the series re-recording mixers, and the music is mixed by Giles Martin and Sam Okell (“Yesterday”).

“The Beatles: Get Back” is currently streaming on Disney+ and will release on Blu-ray on February 23.

Paramount Pictures Celebrates the 50th Anniversary Of The Godfather With A Limited Theatrical Release

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s Academy Award®-winning* masterwork The Godfather, Paramount Pictures announced today that the film will have a limited theatrical release in Dolby Vision beginning February 25, 2022.  All three films in the epic trilogy have been meticulously restored under the direction of Coppola and will be made available on 4K Ultra HD for the first time ever on March 23, 2022.

“I am very proud of The Godfather, which certainly defined the first third of my creative life,” said Francis Ford Coppola.  “With this 50th anniversary tribute, I’m especially proud Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is included, as it captures Mario and my original vision in definitively concluding our epic trilogy. It’s also gratifying to celebrate this milestone with Paramount alongside the wonderful fans who’ve loved it for decades, younger generations who still find it relevant today, and those who will discover it for the first time.”

Coppola’s masterful film adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel chronicles the rise and fall of the Corleone family and the film trilogy is rightfully viewed as one of the greatest in cinematic history.  In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the first film’s original release on March 24, 1972, Paramount and Coppola’s production company American Zoetrope undertook a painstaking restoration of all three films over the course of three years.

Every effort was made to create the finest possible presentation for today’s audiences who can watch the films using technology that has advanced dramatically since 2007 when the last restoration was completed by eminent film historian and preservationist Robert Harris.  Using that work as a blueprint, the team spent thousands of hours to ensure that every frame was evaluated to create the most pristine presentation while remaining true to the original look and feel of the films.

“We felt privileged to restore these films and a little in awe every day we worked on them,” said Andrea Kalas, senior vice president, Paramount Archives.  “We were able to witness first-hand how the brilliant cinematography, score, production design, costume design, editing, performances, and, of course, screenwriting and direction became famously more than the sum of their parts.  It was our commitment to honor all of the filmmakers’ exceptional work.”

RESTORATION DETAILS

  • Over 300 cartons of film were scrutinized to find the best possible resolution for every frame of all three films.
  • Over 4,000 hours were spent repairing film stains, tears, and other anomalies in the negatives.
  • Over 1,000 hours were spent on rigorous color correction to ensure the high dynamic range tools were respectful of the original vision of Coppola and cinematographer Gordon Willis.
  • In addition to the 5.1 audio approved by Walter Murch in 2007, the original mono tracks on The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II have been restored.
  • All work was overseen by Coppola.

Newly restored and remastered in Dolby Vision, all three films in the landmark trilogy will be released together with HDR-10 on 4K Ultra HD Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time ever.  The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set will include The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, and Coppola’s recently re-edited version of the final film, Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone.  The disc set also includes legacy commentaries by Coppola.

In addition to the widely available 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray set, a 4K Ultra HD Limited Collector’s Edition will also be released in deluxe packaging and includes a hardcover coffee table book featuring stunning photographs, as well as portrait art prints on archival paper.  Both 4K Ultra HD sets include new bonus content including an introduction to The Godfather by Coppola, a featurette about the preservation process, photos by acclaimed photographer Steve Schapiro, home movie footage, and comparisons of the new restoration to earlier versions of the films.  A full list of new and legacy bonus content follows:

SOME HAPPY DAY Hits Classic Cinemas Next Month

Some Happy Day is an independent feature film and a homage to St Kilda. It’s made with, and in, the community where the story is set.
Some Happy Day follows Tina, a homeless woman in desperate search of a better life, who meets Frances, a social worker with troubles of her own. Over a single day, their lives interweave, revealing unsettling connections that lead to change and redemption.
On World Day of Social Justice (Sun 20 Feb 2022), Some Happy Day will have its Melbourne premiere with a fundraiser for Sacred Heart Mission at Classic Cinemas as well as additional screenings on Mon 21 Feb 2022 and Wed 23 Feb 2022.
Some Happy Day is inspired by writer and director Catherine Hill’s 20-year experience working with rough sleepers.
“Every day I witnessed the strength, resilience, struggles, and stories of people who have found themselves homeless, sleeping at the beach, in the park, under a stairwell, or in a squat,” said Hill.
Some Happy Day was filmed in partnership with a range of local St Kilda groups and organisations. Many of the actors have lived experiences of surviving without a home and other cast and crew work in social services.
The role of Tina was written for Peta Brady. She is not only a renowned Australian actor across theatre and television, but also works part-time as a drug and alcohol worker at The Salvation Army Needle and Syringe Program in St Kilda.
Sacred Heart Mission and the Salvation Army Statewide Crisis Centre supported Some Happy Day by providing in-kind assistance and access to different locations.
Cathy Humphrey, CEO for Sacred Heart Mission said Some Happy Day provides a realistic impression that contextualises homelessness, its impact on people, and the importance of trauma-informed practice, which is central to ending homelessness.
“It’s fantastic that Sacred Heart Mission is part of Some Happy Day’s Melbourne premiere and I hope it starts some important conversations about how to make a difference,” said Humphrey.
It is estimated that on any given night in Australia approximately 116,000 people will be homeless – 1 in every 200 Australians. Last year, over 420 homeless people died on Australia’s streets. The average life expectancy of rough sleepers is around 50 years of age, almost 30 years lower than housed populations.
Some Happy Day has been accepted into 6 international film festivals and Catherine Hill was nominated for Best Direction of a Feature Film (Under $1M) by the Australian Directors Guild.
Some Happy Day is also available to corporate businesses, community organisations, educational institutions, local councils, and government agencies. The film aims to change perceptions of homelessness, raise awareness and celebrate hope and relationships.
“A sensitive, gritty portrayal of the shadows we all carry and the courage it takes to find our way through.” – Tim Costello AO

“Profoundly moving. Some Happy Day lays bare the underbelly of Australian lives rarely seen. It is brave and real and will have you in tears. A triumph of filmmaking. Tender, uplifting and bravely honest.” – Nikki Gemmell, author, and journalist

“An unflinching and articulate story that works not only as a deeply poignant drama, but as an unapologetic statement against the devastation wrought by Australia’s widening wealth gap … Some Happy Day is a story of connection, perseverance, and community.” – James Fletcher, Filmink
