Odin’s Eye Entertainment Introduces ‘The Library Boys’

Buyers getting first taste of upcoming Australian high-school, high-jinks drama at American Film Market (AFM)

Odin’s Eye Entertainment (OEE) has recently announced it has secured worldwide sales on an upcoming feature film, The Library Boys, directed and penned by rising star Zane Borg (A Man and a Woman, Phantasm).

Only 21 years old when he shot the film, Borg, now 23, brought on executive producers Russell Cunningham of RLC Motion Picture Entertainment, Odin’s Eye CEO Michael Favelle and Pancake Originals’ Gabriel Carrubba to complete the picture in preparation for worldwide sales. Odin’s Eye Entertainment has commenced sales on the project and is introducing to buyers at the AFM

Based on Borg’s own experiences, The Library Boys offers a fresh, universal take on the classic coming-of-age story. Zane (Jack Kenny), James (Joe Kenny), and Mitch (Uisce Goriss-Dazeley) are about to graduate from high school. Lifelong friends, they are met head-on with the challenges of entering adulthood; Zane becomes obsessed with the new girl at school, James’ long-term girlfriend is pushing for him to grow up, meanwhile, Mitch is just trying to lose his virginity but somehow becomes involved with Tilly, the most popular girl in school. Exploring the ups and downs of adolescence struggles with identity and the importance of friendship, The Library Boys is an honest, heartfelt portrayal of high school life in the final year.

Filmed in Victoria under strict COVID protocols, the micro-budget film was shot in 30 days with post-production support from Post Lab IO and Music and Effects.

The Casting Guild of Australia has recently announced the nominees in all categories for its annual CGA Awards. The only casting awards ceremony in the southern hemisphere that celebrates and recognises casting across all mediums including film, television, advertising, and theatre and online content, the winners will be announced at the virtual ceremony via Facebook on Saturday 20 November.

Hosted by Lucy Durack and Eddie Perfect, the Awards seek to acknowledge and support the critical role casting directors play in bringing together great casting opportunities both on a national and international stage.

CGA President David Newman said: “If 2020 was the year of uncertainty, 2021 has proven to be a year of determination and adaptation. Despite what has been thrown at them, casting directors have managed to cast many astounding projects and make sure, despite all the difficulties, that Australian and international stories could continue to be told. We’re looking forward to celebrating these achievements at our awards this year and recognising those who have been nominated.

“We particularly want to thank the actors who have been on a very rocky roller coaster for the last 12 months; many getting roles only to lose them as they were unable to get to the shoot; actors who have spent untold days alone in quarantine – multiple times; and those who got stuck and couldn’t return home. Meet The Man Behind The November Issue Of FilmCentral Magazine: Andy Trieu

Andy Trieu is a producer, host, and TikToker based in Sydney. Currently, he is the lead content creator and face for SW Health TikTok, generating over 8 million views with his daily COVID-19 TikTok updates. Andy is also a renowned voice in Australia’s Asian pop culture industry, working at SBS for 8 years as a founding host of SBS PopAsia’s TV, radio, podcast, and in-flight Qantas programs. He has interviewed the world’s biggest Asian pop celebrities, from K-pop group BTS to ‘Parasite’ Oscar winner Bong loon-ho.

SBS PopAsia reached 1.2 million social media followers and completed over 1000+ shows and was named one of the best home-grown TV shows of the decade by Street mag The Music’ in 2020. From the success of the program, Andy has worked on Triple J’s The Hack, ABC RN, The Drum, Eurovision, 2dayFM with Ash and Angus, Sunrise, Cleo Magazine, and SBS News. Andy played a lead acting role in Screen Australia and Screen NW-funded program Street Smart, on TEN, and Australia’s first Kung fu TV series Maximum Choppage, on ABC.

FilmCentral Magazine recently caught up with Andy to discuss his journey in the industry and here’s what went down:

Can you tell us more about yourself?

I’m mainly a presenter, and producer plus I also act and do some stunts here and there.

How did you get started in the entertainment industry?

I competed in Martial Arts which led to jobs being on film and TV sets of all shapes and sizes. I eventually landed more full-time work on Channel Nine then Foxtel and SBS.

What do you do in the entertainment industry?

I’ve presented on TV, in-flight entertainment, podcast, radio, and online – jack of all trades, master at none? In a nutshell, I collaborate with many in the industry to create, hopefully, something great.

Tell us some of your achievements.

For channel Nine, I was a co-host on the kid’s TV show Kitchen Whiz and we filmed 475 episodes over 7 seasons, being the first ninja host on weekday Australian TV.

I was one of the founding hosts and content producers for Australia’s biggest Asian pop show SBS PopAsia for 8 years, interviewed stars from BTS to Oscar-winner Bong Joon Ho.

I’ve contributed to great teams that performed martial arts and action on Wolverine, MARVEL’s Shang-chi, Hacksaw Ridge, Tomorrow When The War Began, and others.

Finally, I had the honour to be the series lead on TV shows Maximum Choppage on ABC and Channel TEN’s Street Smart.

Tell us about your Martial Arts experience and achievements.

I trained for many years in Kung fu and specialised in different performance swords. I was fortunate to compete on a national and international level earlier in my career and had some success with a handful of first places here and there.

How different is it to act in a movie and to act in a TV series? And which one do you prefer?

They are all really fun and challenging, I think the main difference would be the time frame and the pacing of production, I really enjoy both when I get the opportunity.

Do you prefer working in front of the camera or behind the camera?

I’m a born performer of some sort, so I really enjoy being in front. I have found it also fulfilling to work behind the camera with other creatives! I hope to continue to do both.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

I think I’m good at coming up with random ideas! I’m always a yes man, that would be my weakness perhaps.

What has been your biggest lesson in the industry so far?

It’s important to create authentic work.

What are some of the difficulties of the entertainment business?

Convincing people to love your idea as much as you do.

What do you do when you’re not filming?

I love cooking and watching Netflix. I have been getting into games a tad too!

What has been the most memorable experience of your career so far?

Hosting a major kpop event called KCON! Also working on the MARVEL Shang-chi project was an experience, met some lovely people that I still keep in touch with.

Who have been the most interesting people you’ve met so far?

BTS? Officially the biggest boy band in the world, it was an honour to be in the presence of these talented kpop idols.

If someone is going to make your life into a movie, who would play you?

Simu Liu?

What are your future plans? Inside your career or out of it.

I would love to continue to create content that people like and are authentic to me.

Afghan-Australian Drama “When Pomegranates Howl” Generates Early Oscars Buzz

Australian/Afghanistan co-production When Pomegranates Howl has been selected as Australia’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film at the 2022 Academy Awards. 

It also recently garnered a nomination for Best Youth Film at the 2021 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, which will announce winners on 11 November.

Written and directed by Granaz Moussavi (My Tehran for Sale) this unforgettable anti-war drama, which was shot in Afghanistan, follows Hewad an irrepressible nine-year-old boy, who hustles on the streets of Kabul – selling everything from pomegranate juice to protection from the evil eye. 

Portrayed by Arafat Faiz, an untrained young actor, Hewad is a quick-witted, street-smart kid, who seizes every chance and dreams of becoming a movie star to support his mother and sister.  When an Australian photojournalist befriends Hewad and starts documenting his life in order to create an empathetic depiction of children in a war-torn society, Hewad is hopeful that his luck may finally be changing.

Partly funded by the Adelaide Film Festival and post-produced in Adelaide, When Pomegranates Howl is the latest film from Moussavi, a graduate of AFTRS and Adelaide’s Flinders University, who immigrated to Australia from Tehran with her family in the late 90s.  Since that time, she has distinguished herself as a contemporary poet, film director, and screenwriter.

Distributed in Australia by Bonsai Films, this poignant feature will next be seen at the 2021 Sydney Film Festival along with a late November preview season in Sydney and Canberra, prior to a select theatrical release in the first quarter of 2022.

SMFA (Sydney Multicultural Film Awards) is excited to announce the list of nominees and finalists for the 2021 Sydney Multicultural Film Awards. The festival received over 110 film submissions from directors and producers all over the world across 15 categories and is set to announce the official winners on November 20th, 2021.

SMFA is an award ceremony that celebrates the talent coming from creatives from all around the world, with a focus on inclusion, diversity, and multiculturalism. Set in Sydney, this festival offers a beautiful backdrop and home to the awards ceremony.

In its first year, the festival will be online due to the current lockdown in Australia, however, it will be a spectacular face-to-face event in the following years.

After considering a strong field of 110 submissions, our judges have voted to determine this year’s nominees and finalists. These submissions represent the best and most affecting short films to come out of the past year.

Check out a brand-new, action-packed trailer, poster, and image for Disney and Pixar’s “Lightyear,” an original feature film slated for release in June 2022. The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear—the hero who inspired the toy—introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans. 

Chris Evans (“Knives Out,” “Avengers: Endgame”) lends his voice to Buzz. “The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life,” says Evans. “Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else. Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”

Annie Award-winning director and veteran Pixar animator Angus MacLane, who co-directed 2016’s “Finding Dory,” helms “Lightyear” while Galyn Susman (“Toy Story That Time Forgot” short) produces.

MIFF Is Launching Its First-Ever XR Commission And It’s A Whopping $80k VR Commission

To celebrate MIFF’s contribution to cinema and screen culture in Melbourne over the past seven decades, MIFF is launching its first-ever XR Commission.

With thanks to MIFF Major Supporter Ling Ang, a philanthropic grant of A$80,000 will be awarded for the creation of an immersive XR work that celebrates, interrogates, and illuminates Melbourne – its history and future, its communities and inhabitants – as well as MIFF’s integral role in sustaining the city’s relationship with the moving image.

Submissions are open to Australian artists from all disciplines, whether it be filmmaking, digital media, game development, visual art, or theatre. The chosen project will have its world premiere at MIFF’s 70th edition, to be held on 4–21 August 2022.
